The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Fukuoka is an approximately 11.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Fukuoka, you'll lose 1 hour due to the time zone difference. In December, Fukuoka is much colder than Kuala Lumpur - with highs of 13°C and lows of 5°C. On the 25th (Wed), you'll travel to Kagoshima.

Kagoshima sits across the bay from Sakurajima, an active volcano that serves as a symbol of the city and works its way into many aspects of life here.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kagoshima: Chiran Peace Museum (in Minamikyushu), Kirishima Shrine (in Kirishima) and Ibusuki (Onsen Resorts, JR Southernmost Nishioyama Station, & more). Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the geological forces at Sakurajima, get engrossed in the history at Museum of the Meiji Restoration, appreciate the history behind Saigo Takamori Statue, and admire the landmark architecture of Tsukiyomi Shrine.

You can take a train from Fukuoka to Kagoshima in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or drive. December in Kagoshima sees daily highs of 13°C and lows of 3°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 27th (Fri) so you can take a train to Kumamoto.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Get out of town with these interesting Nagasaki side-trips: Kigaigaura Observation Deck (in Amakusa) and Huis Ten Bosch (in Sasebo). And it doesn't end there: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Mt. Inasa, make a trip to Hongouchi Lourdes, and walk around Nagasaki Peace Park.

Getting from Kumamoto to Nagasaki by car takes about 3 hours. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Kumamoto in December since evenings lows in Nagasaki dip to 7°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 2nd (Thu) to allow enough time to drive to Dazaifu.
