The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
You'll discover tucked-away gems like Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Oharai-machi. Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Ise (Ise Shrine Geku & Okageza), Himeji Castle (in Himeji) and Kofuku-ji Temple (in Nara). And it doesn't end there: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, make a trip to Gion, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Chion-in Temple, and appreciate the extensive heritage of Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Kyoto is an approximately 11-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly; or do a combination of car and ferry. The time zone difference moving from Malaysia Time to Japan Standard Time is 1 hour. Expect colder temperatures when traveling from Kuala Lumpur in December; daily highs in Kyoto reach 13°C and lows reach 4°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 25th (Wed) to allow enough time to take a train to Tokyo.

Get a sense of the local culture at Tokyo National Museum and Senso-ji Temple. Attractions like Tokyo Disneyland and Fukagawa Edo Museum make great kid-friendly stops. There's lots more to do: wander the streets of Odaiba, don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine, and get a sense of history and politics at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Tokyo in 2.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. In December, daily temperatures in Tokyo can reach 14°C, while at night they dip to 4°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) to allow time to travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 29th (Sun), kick back and relax at Kondoi Beach, explore the fascinating underground world of Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave, then kick back and relax at Yonehara Beach, and finally get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki. Keep things going the next day: enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory and then discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

Getting from Tokyo to Ishigaki by flight takes about 5 hours. Traveling from Tokyo in December, you will find days in Ishigaki are a bit warmer (26°C), and nights are much warmer (20°C). Wrap up your sightseeing on the 30th (Mon) early enough to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.

On the 31st (Tue), take in the dramatic scenery at Pinaisara Falls, enjoy the sand and surf at Hoshisuna Beach, then step off the mainland to explore Iriomote Island, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Ida no Hama Beach. Keep things going the next day: make a trip to Nakama-river Protected Region and then skim along the rocks with a canyoning and rapelling tour.

You can ride a ferry from Ishigaki to Iriomote-jima in an hour. In December, plan for daily highs up to 26°C, and evening lows to 20°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 1st (Wed) to allow enough time to ride a ferry to Miyakojima.
