The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Give yourself a bit of retail therapy at Dotonbori and Nishiki Market. Get a sense of the local culture at Gion and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, contemplate the long history of Heian Shrine, and go for a walk through Arashiyama.

Orlando, USA to Kyoto is an approximately 21.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly; or do a combination of bus and flight. The time zone changes from Eastern Standard Time (EST) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually a 14 hour difference. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Orlando in October: high temperatures in Kyoto hover around 74°F and lows are around 60°F. The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Wed): take in nature's colorful creations at Koko-en Garden, steep yourself in history at Nishi no Maru, explore the historical opulence of Himeji Castle, then look for gifts at Myochin Hompo, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Yoneda Taishiji Temple.

You can take a train from Kyoto to Himeji in an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In October in Himeji, expect temperatures between 72°F during the day and 64°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 9th (Wed) so you can catch the train to Hiroshima.

Kick off your visit on the 10th (Thu): explore the historical opulence of Hiroshima Castle, steep yourself in history at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and then examine the collection at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. On your second day here, stop by Itsukushima Gekijyo, get to know the fascinating history of Miyajima, and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Itsukushima Shrine.

Traveling by train from Himeji to Hiroshima takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of train and bus. October in Hiroshima sees daily highs of 73°F and lows of 61°F at night. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 11th (Fri) so you can travel to Nikko.

A gateway to a sprawling and diverse national park, a center of Shinto spiritualism and place of Buddhist worship, an emblem of the riches and dominance of the Tokugawa shogunate: Nikko means many things to many people.
Shop till you drop at Moegi Honten and Fujiya. Get some cultural insight at Nikko Tosho-gu and Nikko National Park. Go for a jaunt from Nikko to Mashiko-machi to see Pottery Warehouse about 1h 15 min away. There's lots more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Taiyuimbyo Shrine, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Chuzenji, admire the sheer force of Kegon Falls, and explore the striking landscape at Kammangafuchi Gorge.

You can do a combination of flight and train from Hiroshima to Nikko in 6 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or drive. Expect little chillier weather when traveling from Hiroshima in October: highs in Nikko hover around 67°F, while lows dip to 62°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to take a train to Tokyo.
