The coastal city of Akita has gained a wider reputation for its Kanto Matsuri, or "pole lantern festival," where skilled performers balance long bamboo poles on their foreheads with glowing paper lanterns attached to the end.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Step off the beaten path and head to Nanzen-ji Temple and Eikando Zenrinji Temple. You can do a combination of flight and train from Aomori to Kyoto in 4.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or drive. Plan for a bit warmer temperatures traveling from Aomori in September, with highs in Kyoto at 33°C and lows at 23°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 11th (Fri) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.

Getting from Ishigaki to Miyakojima by flight takes about 2 hours. In September in Miyakojima, expect temperatures between 36°C during the day and 30°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 19th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Nagasaki.

You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Yutoku Inari Shrine and Nijino Matsubara. Suwa Shrine and Shitsu Church are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get out of town with these interesting Nagasaki side-trips: Onsen Resorts (in Unzen) and Former Takatori House (in Karatsu).
