The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Nijo Castle and Dotonbori. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kennin-ji Temple and Shimogamo Jinja. Go for a jaunt from Kyoto to Osaka to see Osaka Castle about 1h 10 min away. There's much more to do: contemplate the long history of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sanjusangendo Temple, don't miss a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and wander the streets of Gion.

San Juan, Puerto Rico to Kyoto is an approximately 24-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly; or do a combination of car, flight, and train. The time zone changes from Atlantic Standard Time to Japan Standard Time, which is usually a 13 hour difference. Expect a bit cooler temperatures when traveling from San Juan in September; daily highs in Kyoto reach 33°C and lows reach 23°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 3rd (Tue) so you can travel to Ishigaki.

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
On the 4th (Wed), tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonehara Beach, then visit a coastal fixture at Cape Hirakubozaki, and then take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, look for gifts at Yurateiku Market, and then stroll through Kondoi Beach.

Traveling by combination of train and flight from Kyoto to Ishigaki takes 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Traveling from Kyoto in September, things will get a bit warmer in Ishigaki: highs are around 37°C and lows about 30°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Thu) to allow time to ride a ferry to Iriomote-jima.

We've included these beaches for you: Aragusuku Beach and Sunayama Beach. Take a break from the city and head to Scuba & Snorkeling and Yabiji. Getting from Iriomote-jima to Miyakojima by ferry takes about 4 hours. In September in Miyakojima, expect temperatures between 36°C during the day and 30°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 11th (Wed) early enough to travel to Tokyo.
