The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Change things up with these side-trips from Kyoto: Himeji Castle (in Himeji), Osaka (Universal Studios Japan & Koji Kinutani Tenku Art Museum) and Dotombori District (in Dotombori). Sydney, Australia to Kyoto is an approximately 14-hour flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Kyoto. Expect much hotter temperatures when traveling from Sydney in August; daily highs in Kyoto reach 39°C and lows reach 29°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 3rd (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.
