Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Colosseum and Piazza Navona are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Centro Storico Associazione Centro Storico and Colle Aventino. The adventure continues: explore the world behind art at Galleria Borghese, delve into the distant past at Palatine Hill, steep yourself in history at St. Peter's Basilica, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church of St. Louis of the French.
