Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
Get a sense of the local culture at Piazza San Marco and Arena di Verona. Visit Doge's Palace and St Mark's Campanile for their historical value. Step out of Venice with an excursion to Piazza delle Erbe in Verona--about 1h 30 min away. There's still lots to do: admire the masterpieces at Peggy Guggenheim Collection, admire the striking features of Basilica di San Marco, explore the activities along Canal Grande, and snap pictures at Ponte di Rialto.
