Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Explore Quetzaltenango's surroundings by going to Xetulul Theme Park (in Retalhuleu) and Fuentes Georginas (in Zunil). There's still lots to do: get impressive views of Santa Maria Volcano, admire the landmark architecture of Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango, contemplate the waterfront views at Laguna Chicabal, and stop by Yabal Handicrafts.
