Nitra

Nitra is a city in western Slovakia, situated at the foot of Zobor Mountain in the valley of the river Nitra. Slovak Agricultural Museum and Diecezne Muzeum will appeal to museum buffs. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Nitra Castle and Trenciansky Hrad. Change things up with these side-trips from Nitra: Cachtice Castle (in Cachtice), Karner sv. Michala (in Trencin) and Dolna Krupa Castle (in Dolna Krupa). There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Church of St. Michael the Archangel, take in the spiritual surroundings of Church of St. Ladislav, and step into the grandiose world of Smolenice Castle.

Banska Bystrica

Banská Bystrica is a city in central Slovakia located on the Hron River in a long and wide valley encircled by the mountain chains of the Low Tatras, the Veľká Fatra, and the Kremnica Mountains. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Orava Castle and Old Castle Banska Stiavnica. Do some cultural sightseeing at Pusty Hrad (Deserted Castle) and Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Žilina is a city in north-western Slovakia, around 200km from the capital Bratislava, close to both the Czech and Polish borders.
