Get a sense of the local culture at Rethymnon Old Town and The Holy Monastery of Preveli. Museum-lovers will appreciate Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno and Folk Museum of Spili. Get out of town with these interesting Rethymnon side-trips: Melidoni (Melidoni Cave & Reptisland), Preveli Beach (in Lefkogia) and St. Nicholas Church (in Georgioupolis). There's lots more to do: take in the architecture and atmosphere at Monastery of Arkadi, steep yourself in history at The Venetian Fortezza, and explore the activities along Lake Kournas.

Kick off your visit on the 15th (Tue): explore and take pictures at Agia Galini Beach, delve into the distant past at Palace of Faistos, and then kick back and relax at Red Sand Beach (Kokkini Ammos). Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: see the interesting displays at Thirathen Museum of Musical Instruments, then tour the pleasant surroundings at Matala beach, and then Head underground at Matala Caves.

Drive from Rethymnon to Matala in 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In September in Matala, expect temperatures between 32°C during the day and 24°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 16th (Wed) so you can drive to Agios Nikolaos.
