When traveling from San Pedro de Atacama in February, plan for slightly colder days in Puerto Varas, with highs around 23°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 10°C. Castro, Isla Chiloe

Main city on Chile's Chiloe Island, Castro represents one of the country's oldest inhabited settlements, making its fortune as both a tourist center and transportation hub.
Step out of Castro with an excursion to Cascadas de Tocoihue in Dalcahue--about 1 hour away. There's much more to do: admire the landmark architecture of Church of San Francisco, surround yourself with nature on a nature and wildlife tour, see the interesting displays at Museo del acordeon Sergio Colivoro Barria, and head off the coast to Lemuy Island.

Take a bus from Puerto Varas to Castro in 3 hours. In February, daily temperatures in Castro can reach 22°C, while at night they dip to 10°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 7th (Fri) so you can take a bus to Ancud.

A city of 40,000 people, Ancud was the capital of Chiloe Archipelago until it was superseded by the city of Castro in 1982.
Take a break from Ancud with a short trip to Isla Aucar in Quemchi, about 58 minutes away. Next up on the itinerary: examine the collection at Museo Regional de Ancud, don't miss a visit to Plaza de Armas de Ancud, identify plant and animal life at Chiloe Island Penguin Colony, and take in the architecture and atmosphere at Catedral de Ancud.
