Sunderland is a city at the centre of the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 10 miles southeast of Newcastle upon Tyne, 12 miles northeast of Durham, 101 miles southeast of Edinburgh and 240 miles north of London. Venture out of the city with trips to Durham (Low Burnhall Woods, Durham Cathedral, &more), Helmsley (National Centre for Birds of Prey, Helmsley Castle, &more) and All Saints Church (in Sinnington). There's lots more to do: examine the collection at National Glass Centre, don't miss a visit to World War One Soldier Sculpture, stroll around Herrington Country Park, and have fun at Karting North East.

To see maps, other places to visit, ratings, and more tourist information, you can read our Sunderland trip planning tool.

If you are flying in from Turkey, the closest major aiports are Newcastle Airport, Durham Tees Valley Airport and Leeds Bradford Airport. Expect a daytime high around °C in September, and nighttime lows around °C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) early enough to travel back home.
