Ponta Delgada

— 9 nights
As the busy capital of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada represents the most visited place on the island. Known for its historical buildings, the city offers 17th- and 18th-century convents and churches, as well as cobbled pedestrian streets and hidden squares.
Take a break from the city and head to Dolphin & Whale Watching and Praia de Santa Barbara. Kids will appreciate attractions like Caldeira das Sete Cidades and Piscinas Naturais. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Ponta Delgada: Ribeira Grande (Frade Natural Pools & Praia Calhau D'Areia), Islet of Vila Franca do Campo (in Vila Franca do Campo) and Mosteiros Beach (in Mosteiros). Spend the 21st (Sun) behind the viewfinder with an inspiring photography tour. There's still lots to do: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, explore the fascinating underground world of Gruta do Carvao, take in the dramatic scenery at Salto do Cabrito, and take some stellar pictures from Plantacoes de Cha Gorreana.

Green Island
Known as The Green Island, Sao Miguel is the largest of the nine islands of Azores and is considered a natural paradise. These islands were discovered in the 15th century and, according to myth, are reputed to be part of the lost empire of Atlantis. Sao Miguel's most prominent feature is a set of twin lakes, one of which is blue and the other green. Visitors also enjoy the island's park, golf courses, beaches, mountains, marina, and ocean views. Stop for a look at the city's monuments and architecture, and experience the cobbled streets lined with a variety of restaurants, shops, bars, and cafes.
