Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and Quinta da Regaleira are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Discover out-of-the-way places like Castelo dos Mouros and Ponte 25 de Abril. Get out of town with these interesting Lisbon side-trips: Park and National Palace of Pena (in Sintra) and Cabo da Roca (in Colares). There's lots more to do: explore the historical opulence of Castelo de S. Jorge, make a trip to Belém Tower, take in the spiritual surroundings of Igreja de Sao Domingos (Santa Justa e Rufina), and admire the masterpieces at Museu Calouste Gulbenkian.

Along Portugal's southern Algarve region sits Albufeira, a city boasting 20 beaches for visitors to choose from.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Falesia Beach and Praia da Coelha. Visit Igreja de Sao Lourenco de Almancil and Cerro da Vila for their historical value. Change things up with a short trip to Muralhas de Faro in Faro (about 38 minutes away). There's still lots to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Praia dos Olhos de Água, tour the pleasant surroundings at Praia do Peneco, and get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour.

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) and Igreja do Carmo. Visit Santuario Nossa Senhora dos Remedios and Capela das Almas for their historical value. Venture out of the city with trips to Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira (in Santa Maria da Feira) and Catedral de Lamego (in Lamego). You can fly from Albufeira to Porto in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a train. In July, Porto is little chillier than Albufeira - with highs of 28°C and lows of 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 30th (Tue) to allow time for travel back home.
