Porto

Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Step off the beaten path and head to Bom Jesus do Monte and Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral). Change things up with these side-trips from Porto: Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes) and Santuario de Santa Luzia (in Viana do Castelo). Dedicate the 23rd (Tue) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. Next up on the itinerary: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, contemplate the long history of Palacio da Bolsa, don't miss a visit to Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular, and admire the landmark architecture of Paco Episcopal.
