Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira and Bom Jesus do Monte. Discover out-of-the-way places like Casa Ramos Pinto and Museu de Aveiro. Venture out of the city with trips to Praca da Republica (in Braga), Centro Historico de Guimaraes (in Guimaraes) and Praia da Costa Nova (in Gafanha da Encarnacao). Next up on the itinerary: get the lay of the land with Walking tours, pause for some photo ops at Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular, stroll around Museu Serralves, and pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco.
