Known as the City by the Sea, Ostend represents not only a seaside resort, but also a destination for history lovers.
Venture out of the city with trips to Ieper (Ypres) (Saint Julien Memorial, Saint Martin's Cathedral, & more), Tyne Cot Cemetery (in Zonnebeke) and De Panne (PlopsaLand De Panne & De Panne Beach). There's much more to do: brush up on your military savvy at Atlantic Wall Museum, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, see the interesting displays at Museumschip Amandine, and appreciate the history behind Fort Napoleon.

To find maps, where to stay, traveler tips, and more tourist information, refer to the Ostend trip planning website .

If you are flying in from Canada, the closest major airports are Brussels Airport, Ostend-Bruges International Airport and Antwerp International Airport (Deurne). In September, daily temperatures in Ostend can reach 22°C, while at night they dip to 12°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 23rd (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
