The main tourist town in the Bay of Islands area, Paihia gives visitors a good range of accommodations, a convenient town center, long sandy beaches, and interesting architecture.
Visit Waitangi Treaty Grounds and KeriKeri New Zealand for their historical value. Get outdoors at Scuba & Snorkeling and Paihia Harbour. Next up on the itinerary: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, cast your line with a fishing tour, fly like a bird with a parasailing or paragliding tour, and take in the dramatic scenery at Haruru Falls.

Surrounded by lakes and featuring impressive areas of geothermal landscape, the city of Rotorua offers an otherwordly landscape and a welcoming, peaceful environment, with the culture of the native Maori people very much in the foreground.
Kids will enjoy Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Zipline. Escape the urban bustle at Te Puia and Adrenaline & Extreme Tours. Step out of Rotorua to go to Taupo and see Huka Falls Walkway, which is approximately 1h 5 min away. There's much more to do: identify plant and animal life at Rainbow Springs Nature Park, delve into the lush surroundings at Redwoods, Whakarewarewa Forest, and get interesting insight from Tours.

Traveling by combination of taxi and flight from Paihia to Rotorua takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In December in Rotorua, expect temperatures between 25°C during the day and 17°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Thu) early enough to travel to Whakapapa.

The country's largest ski resort brings winter sports enthusiasts from all over New Zealand, while a series of short volcano walks as well as numerous alpine crossings make it easy to hike on your Whakapapa trip throughout the year.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Fri): trek along Tongariro Alpine Crossing, then take in the dramatic scenery at Taranaki Falls, and then hike along Whakapapa Nature Walk. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: admire the sheer force of Tawhai Falls, explore and take pictures at Te Porere Redoubt, and then hike along Horsemtrails.

Getting from Rotorua to Whakapapa by car takes about 2.5 hours. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Sat) to allow enough time to travel to Queenstown.
