The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II. This history, of course, remains important to the city, its inhabitants, and to the wider world, and should not be forgotten.
Nagasaki is known for museums, parks, and historic sites. Sasebo

With its U.S. Navy base, Sasebo has certainly developed pockets with an international feel: in downtown, often known as Sailor Town, you'll happen upon a number of eateries serving American-style hamburgers.
On the 9th (Wed), get in on the family fun at Huis Ten Bosch. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 10th (Thu): contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Ohashikannonji, then enjoy breathtaking views from Ishidake Observatory, then step off the mainland to explore Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort, and finally take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Yumihari.

Fukuoka

The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
On the 11th (Fri), take in the spiritual surroundings of Kushida Shrine, take an in-depth tour of Hakatamachiya Furusatokan, stroll around Kasuga Park, take in nature's colorful creations at Komyozen-ji Temple, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Tenkai Inari Shrine. When traveling from Fukuoka in June, plan for a bit cooler days in Yufu, with highs around 27°C, while nights are about the same with lows around 23°C. Aso

Formed in 2005 after the merger of several smaller towns, Aso still offers a break from the urbane.
