Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Tenryuji Temple and Nanzen-ji Temple. Get a sense of the local culture at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Tofuku-ji Temple. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Hase-dera Temple (in Sakurai), Koya-cho (Jokiin, Kongobu-ji Temple, &more) and Nara (Toshodai-ji Temple & Nigatsu-do Temple).
