The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kayabuki-no-sato Kitamura and Fuuka-Kimono. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kyoto: Onsen Resorts (in Ayabe), The Little Indigo Museum (in Nantan) and Suntory Yamazaki Distillery (in Shimamoto-cho). And it doesn't end there: wander the streets of Fushimi Suigo, step into the grandiose world of Hikone Castle, contemplate the long history of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Yasaka Shrine.

Tokyo to Kyoto is an approximately 2.5-hour train ride. You can also fly; or drive. Expect a daytime high around 16°C in March, and nighttime lows around 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Thu) to allow time to take a train to Kobe.

Walkable, small, and aesthetically charming, Kobe has served as Japan's first and premier international trading outpost since opening to trade with China in the mid-19th century.
Explore hidden gems such as Kirin Beer Kobe Factory and Ashiya Comprehensive Park Ashiya Beach. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Kobe: Otsuka Museum of Art (in Naruto), Himeji (Koko-en & Shoshazan Engyoji) and Takeda Castle Ruins (in Asago). There's much more to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Kimiidera Temple, stroll around Fukadaike Park, get to know the resident critters at Kobe Oji Zoo, and take in nature's colorful creations at Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens.

Traveling by train from Kyoto to Kobe takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive. In March in Kobe, expect temperatures between 14°C during the day and 7°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 19th (Tue) to allow time to drive to Nara.

The country's first established capital, Nara houses some of the most storied buildings and natural attractions in Japan, with eight World Heritage Sites in total.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Hase-dera Temple and Kinpusenji Temple. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Nara: Yoshino-cho (Yoshimizu Shrine & Mt. Yoshino). There's still lots to do: indulge your thirst for a good beer at Harushika Brewery, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kofuku-ji Temple, and identify plant and animal life at Rokuen.
