Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Kids will appreciate attractions like Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and Tokyo Disneyland. Change things up with a short trip to Tokyo DisneySea in Maihama (about 30 minutes away). And it doesn't end there: get a sense of history and politics at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings, make a trip to Meiji Jingu Shrine, get your game on at Owl cafe Akiba Fukurou, and admire the striking features of Tokyo Tower.

Auckland, New Zealand to Tokyo is an approximately 15-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of bus and flight. The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Start off your visit on the 20th (Wed): don't miss a visit to Heian Shrine, take in the spiritual surroundings of Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, and then contemplate the long history of Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Keep things going the next day: get engrossed in the history at Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts Fureaikan, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, then step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and finally wander the streets of Gion.

Traveling by flight from Sendai to Kyoto takes 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train; or drive. When traveling from Sendai in May, plan for a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Kyoto: temperatures range from 29°C by day to 17°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 21st (Thu) early enough to catch the train to Osaka.

Kids will enjoy Universal Studios Japan and Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. Get out of town with these interesting Osaka side-trips: Himeji Castle (in Himeji), Nara (Kofuku-ji Temple & Nara Park) and Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum (in Higashinada). There's more to do: explore the historical opulence of Osaka Castle and take a stroll through Dotonbori.
