You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Tenryuji Temple and Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kinkaku-ji. Step out of Kyoto to go to Nara and see Nara Park, which is approximately 1h 10 min away. Next up on the itinerary: contemplate the long history of Tofuku-ji Temple, make a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.

Traveling by train from Hakone-machi to Kyoto takes 4 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Hakone-machi in October, you will find days in Kyoto are a bit warmer (27°C), and nights are about the same (18°C).
