Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Kick off your visit on the 4th (Mon): enjoy the sand and surf at Kondoi Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: enjoy the sea views from Cape Hirakubozaki, then take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Yonehara Beach.

Toowoomba, Australia to Ishigaki is an approximately 23-hour flight. The time zone changes from Australian Eastern Standard Time (Queensland) (AEST) to Japan Standard Time (JST), which is usually a -1 hour difference. When traveling from Toowoomba in January, plan for a bit cooler days and about the same nights in Ishigaki: temperatures range from 24°C by day to 19°C at night. A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
On the 9th (Sat), observe the fascinating underwater world at Toba Aquarium, take an in-depth tour of Sengukan, then contemplate the long history of Oharai-machi, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Sarutahiko Shrine, and finally take in the spiritual surroundings of Ise Shrine Geku.

Traveling by combination of flight and train from Miyakojima to Ise takes 5.5 hours. When traveling from Miyakojima in January, plan for much colder days and slightly colder nights in Ise: temperatures range from 9°C by day to 7°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 9th (Sat) so you can drive to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Eikando Zenrinji Temple and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine will appeal to history buffs. Get some cultural insight at Tofuku-ji Temple and Kinkaku-ji. Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Osaka (Dotonbori & Osaka Castle). The adventure continues: steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, don't miss a visit to Gion, take in the spiritual surroundings of Sanjusangendo Temple, and explore the historical opulence of Nijo Castle.

You can drive from Ise to Kyoto in 2 hours. Other options are to take a train; or take a bus. Traveling from Ise in January, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be a bit cooler in Kyoto, with lows of 1°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Wed) so you can take a train to Kanazawa.

Get some historical perspective at Daihonzan Eiheiji Temple and Wada House. Attractions like Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum and Chirihama Nagisa Driveway make great kid-friendly stops. Get out of town with these interesting Kanazawa side-trips: Shirakawa-mura (Shirakawago Gassho Zukuri Minkaen & The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses) and Nanto (Ainokura Gassho Community & Suganuma Gassho Community).
