Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
You've added Tokyo Tower, Takeshita Street, Meiji Jingu Shrine, and other attractions to your itinerary. Kids will appreciate attractions like Tokyo Disneyland and Ueno Zoo. There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Sensō-ji.

You'll lose 1 hour traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Tokyo due to the time zone difference. Plan for cooler temperatures traveling from Kuala Lumpur in November, with highs in Tokyo at 19°C and lows at 11°C. On the 4th (Wed), you'll have the morning to explore before heading off to Hakone-machi.

Hakone-machi

Sitting at the foot of Mount Fuji, Hakone-machi has become a popular retreat from Tokyo for locals and tourists alike.
Your day-by-day itinerary now includes Lake Kawaguchi as well as Mount Fuji. Get some cultural insight at The Hakone Open-Air Museum and Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu. It doesn't end there: contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Ashi (Ashinoko).

Traveling by train from Tokyo to Hakone-machi takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. Traveling from Tokyo in December, you will find days in Hakone-machi are slightly colder (8°C), and nights are about the same (5°C). On the 8th (Sun), you'll travel to Takayama.

Hidden high up in the Japanese Alps, Takayama remained largely cut off from the rest of Japan for centuries, allowing the local culture to grow in relative isolation.
Get some cultural insight at The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go Gassho Style Houses and Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall. Your inner history buff will appreciate Takayama Jinya and Higashiyama Walking Course. Change things up with these side-trips from Takayama: Gero Onsen Gassho Village (in Gero) and Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (in Tateyama-machi). Next up on the itinerary: take a stroll through Sanmachi Suji and get a new perspective on nature at Hida Minzoka Mura Folk Village (Hida no Sato).

You can drive from Hakone-machi to Takayama in 4 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. In December in Takayama, expect temperatures between 9°C during the day and 3°C at night. You will have some time to spend on the 11th (Wed) before leaving for Karuizawa-machi.

The only city in the world to have hosted both summer and winter Olympics, the resort town of Karuizawa-machi boasts clean air, impressive mountain scenery, and many outdoor activities and hot springs.
Attractions like Shiraito Falls and Harunire Terrace make great kid-friendly stops. Get outdoors at Kumoba Pond and Tombo no Yu. There's still lots to do: appreciate the history behind Stone Church, fly down the slopes at Karuizawa Prince Hotel Ski Resort, browse the different shops at Karuizawa prince shopping plaza, and pause for some serene contemplation at Karuizawa Kogen Church.

Drive from Takayama to Karuizawa-machi in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or do a combination of bus and train. Traveling from Takayama in December, expect slightly colder with lows of 0°C in Karuizawa-machi. You will have some time to spend on the 14th (Sat) before leaving for home.
