The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some cultural insight at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Your inner history buff will appreciate Kinkaku-ji and Osaka Castle. Change things up with a short trip to Dotombori District in Dotombori (about 1h 10 min away). Next up on the itinerary: take in the spiritual surroundings of Chion-in Temple, contemplate the long history of Sanjusangendo Temple, step into the grandiose world of Nijo Castle, and wander the streets of Gion.

Start off your visit on the 16th (Thu): take in panoramic vistas at Tamatorizaki Observatory, thenenjoy the sea views from Cape Hirakubozaki, and then find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area. Traveling by combination of train and flight from Hiroshima to Ishigaki takes 6 hours. Alternatively, you can fly. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Hiroshima in April, with highs in Ishigaki at 78°F and lows at 70°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Fri) to allow time to travel to Miyakojima.
