The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine and Nijo Castle will appeal to history buffs. Kinkaku-ji and Sanjusangendo Temple are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Step out of Kyoto with an excursion to Dotombori District in Dotombori--about 1h 10 min away. There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Eikando Zenrinji Temple, stop by Gion, steep yourself in history at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and step into the grandiose world of Osaka Castle.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. October in Kyoto sees daily highs of 27°C and lows of 18°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) early enough to take a train to Hiroshima.

Getting from Kyoto to Hiroshima by train takes about 2.5 hours. Other options: drive; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 26°C in October, and nighttime lows around 19°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 14th (Wed) to allow enough time to travel to Miyakojima.
