Grapple with history and appreciate modernity in Hiroshima, a city known around the world for its tragic past and inspiring rebirth.
Start off your visit on the 14th (Mon): contemplate the long history of Atomic Bomb Dome, steep yourself in history at Peace Memorial Park - Hiroshima, and then see the interesting displays at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at Itsukushima Shrine and then step off the mainland to explore Miyajima.

Melbourne, Australia to Hiroshima is an approximately 16.5-hour combination of flight and train. You can also fly. The time zone difference moving from Australian Eastern Standard Time (Victoria) to Japan Standard Time is minus 1 hour. Traveling from Melbourne in October, expect somewhat warmer with lows of 19°C in Hiroshima. Cap off your sightseeing on the 15th (Tue) early enough to catch the train to Himeji.

The castle around which the city of Himeji has developed represents one of the best preserved in the country, and has been designated as a national treasure and a World Heritage Site.
Start off your visit on the 16th (Wed): take in nature's colorful creations at Koko-en Garden, then step into the grandiose world of Himeji Castle, then don't miss a visit to Shoshazan Engyoji, and finally stroll around Kunimi no Mori Park. Keep things going the next day: contemplate the long history of Yoneda Taishiji Temple, then take in the awesome beauty at Mt. Takamikura, and then don't miss a visit to Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

Traveling by train from Hiroshima to Himeji takes an hour. Alternatively, you can drive; or do a combination of bus and train. In October in Himeji, expect temperatures between 26°C during the day and 20°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Thu) early enough to travel to Osaka.

You can take a train from Himeji to Osaka in 1.5 hours. Another option is to drive. Traveling from Himeji in October, plan for little chillier nights in Osaka, with lows around 17°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 20th (Sun) so you can take a train to Kanazawa.

Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: cruise along Chirihama Nagisa Driveway, admire the masterpieces at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, then make a trip to Omicho Market, then admire the landmark architecture of Kanazawa Station, and finally steep yourself in history at Higashichaya Old Town.
