Tokyo holds the status of most populous metropolitan area in the world--a fact you'll find tangible as you walk the bustling streets and explore its diverse neighborhoods and cultures.
Tokyo is known for historic sites, shopping, and parks. Your plan includes some of its best attractions: don't miss a visit to Meiji Jingu Shrine, get great views at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, visit Odaiba, and take in the spiritual surroundings of Senso-ji Temple.

Sydney, Australia to Tokyo is an approximately 13.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight. Due to the time zone difference, you'll gain 1 hour traveling from Sydney to Tokyo. Traveling from Sydney in May, expect Tokyo to be a bit warmer, temps between 28°C and 19°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 28th (Thu) so you can catch the train to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Explore Kyoto's surroundings by going to Osaka (Dotonbori & Osaka Castle) and Tower Knives Osaka (in Naniwa). There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, make a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and stop by Gion.

Take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can fly; or drive. In May, daytime highs in Kyoto are 29°C, while nighttime lows are 17°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 31st (Sun) early enough to catch the train to Hiroshima.

Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: enjoy breathtaking views from Beppu Tower, witness a stunning natural landmark at Kamado Jigoku, contemplate the waterfront views at Lake Kinrin, hike along Mt. You can take a train from Hiroshima to Beppu in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry. While traveling from Hiroshima, expect slightly colder days and about the same nights in Beppu, ranging from highs of 27°C to lows of 23°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Thu) early enough to drive to Nagasaki.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Change things up with these side-trips from Nagasaki: Sasebo (Domtoren & Huis Ten Bosch). There's lots more to do: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, examine the collection at Nagasaki Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims, walk around Nabekanmuriyama Park, and pause for some serene contemplation at Ōura Church.
