Virtually unchanged for the last six centuries, Venice is actually a group of islands made famous by a series of canals, bridges, monuments, piazzas, and narrow pedestrian lanes.
On the 2nd (Mon), pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica di Sant’Antonio, then pause for some serene contemplation at Scrovegni Chapel, then steep yourself in history at Scuola Grande di San Rocco, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at San Giorgio Maggiore. Keep things going the next day: admire the striking features of Basilica Palladiana, take in the spiritual surroundings of Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, take in the views from Ponte dei Sospiri, pause for some serene contemplation at Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, then admire the landmark architecture of Scala Contarini del Bovolo, and finally take a stroll through Cannaregio.

Sydney, Australia to Venice is an approximately 24-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train; or do a combination of train and flight. Considered a cultural, artistic, and architectural jewel of Italy, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Historic Centre of San Gimignano and Basilica San Vitale. Duomo di Pisa and Castello Estense are good opportunities to explore the local culture. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Florence: Pisa (Camposanto & Battistero), Basilica - Santuario di Santo Stefano (in Bologna) and Abbazia di San Galgano (in Chiusdino). There's lots more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Centro Storico, appreciate the history behind Loggia dei Lanzi, get great views at Basilica San Miniato al Monte, and explore the world behind art at Museum of Opera of Saint Maria of Fiore.

You can take a train from Venice to Florence in 2.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. When traveling from Venice in December, plan for a bit warmer days and about the same nights in Florence: temperatures range from 15°C by day to 4°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 7th (Sat) to allow time to take a train to Rome.

Villa Borghese and Duomo di Orvieto will appeal to history buffs. Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli and St. Clement Basilica are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Naples is the capital of the Italian region Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan. Parco Acheologico di Ercolano and Duomo di Salerno will appeal to history buffs. You'll explore and learn at Galleria Borbonica and Villa San Michele. Venture out of the city with trips to Vesuvio National Park (in Ottaviano), Paestum Ruins (in Paestum) and Capri (I Faraglioni & Giardini di Augusto).
