Aptly nicknamed the Eternal City, Rome is the birthplace of the Roman Empire, one of the world's greatest civilizations ever.
Galleria Borghese and Stanze di Raffaello will appeal to museum buffs. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Centro Storico Associazione Centro Storico and Cupola di San Pietro. Explore Rome's surroundings by going to Castello Orsini-Odescalchi (in Bracciano), Tarquinia (Necropoli di Tarquinia & Museo Nazionale Tarquiniense) and Mercato di Civitavecchia (in Civitavecchia).
