In many ways the most modern of Italian cities, Milan is a busy, elegant metropolis with an impressive list of grand palaces, fine churches, and important museums.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore and Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore. Your inner history buff will appreciate Duomo di Milano and Cattedrale (Duomo) di Bergamo e Battistero. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Milan: Orta San Giulio (Piazza Motta, Lake Orta, &more) and Mura Venete (in Bergamo).
