The capital of the island of Funen, Odense represents the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, who penned such classics as "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Denmark's third-largest city proudly displays its link to the famous writer with museums, sculptures, and public art installations dedicated to Andersen and his stories.
Get out of town with these interesting Odense side-trips: Nyborg (Nyborg Faestning & Vor Frue Kirke), Storebælt (in Korsoer) and Svendborg (Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum - The Danish Welfare Museum, Thuroe Minigolf, &more). Step out of Copenhagen to go to Helsingoer and see Kronborg, which is approximately 48 minutes away. There's still lots to do: enjoy breathtaking views from Rundetarn, find something for the whole family at Tivoli Gardens, visit Stroeget, and take a stroll through Nyhavn.
