Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
Take a break from the city and head to Indian Nose and Laguna Chicabal. Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Catedral del Espiritu Santo and La Ermita de la Concepcion (La Conquistadora). Step out of Quetzaltenango with an excursion to Fuentes Georginas in Zunil--about 52 minutes away. Make the 17th (Wed) a memorable day with a climbing tour. The adventure continues: get impressive views of Santa Maria Volcano.

Getting from Retalhuleu to Quetzaltenango by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a bus. In July, Quetzaltenango is much colder than Retalhuleu - with highs of 71°F and lows of 49°F. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 17th (Wed) early enough to take a bus to Guatemala City.
