An island town, capital of the landlocked region of Peten, attractive Flores features pleasant architecture that complements the shimmering appearance of the surrounding lake.
Step out of Flores with an excursion to Cerro Biotope Cahui in El Remate--about 32 minutes away. There's lots more to do: make a trip to Jorge's Rope Swing, see the interesting displays at Museo del Islote Santa Barbara, look for all kinds of wild species at Ixpanpajul Nature Park, and admire nature's wide array of creatures at Petencito Zoo.

Named for the Quetzal bird--one of Guatemala's national symbols--Quetzaltenango once included the territories controlled by K'iche' Mayans, a pre-Columbian tribe eventually supplanted by Spanish conquistadores.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Quetzaltenango: Fuentes Georginas (in Zunil) and Retalhuleu (Xocomil & Xetulul Theme Park). There's still lots to do: contemplate the geological forces at Santa Maria Volcano, stop by Ketzali Accessories, explore the activities along Laguna Chicabal, and admire the striking features of Teatro Municipal de Quetzaltenango.
