Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Savior on the Spilled Blood and Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya Krepost). Get a sense of the local culture at The State Hermitage Museum and Russian Museum. There's much more to do: explore the galleries of Saint Isaac's Cathedral, pause for some serene contemplation at Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas, examine the collection at The Anna Akhmatova Museum, and steep yourself in history at Bronze Horseman, Monument To Peter I.
