Colombia's heart and soul, Bogota has earned the nickname "Athens of South America" thanks to its abundance of universities, libraries, and lower-level schools.
Get some cultural insight at Gold Museum (Museo del Oro) and Casa Museo Quinta de Bolivar. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Laguna de Guatavita and Casa de Moneda - Coleccion Numismatica del Banco de la Republica. When in Bogota, make a side trip to see Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira in Zipaquira, approximately 54 minutes away. There's still lots to do: explore the world behind art at Museo Botero del Banco de la Republica, contemplate the long history of Bolivar plaza, and take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Monserrate.

The site of the continent's first Spanish colony, Cartagena retains much of its colonial flavor thanks to a World Heritage-listed old town, encircled by old walls and protected by imposing fortresses.
Get some historical perspective at Iglesia de la Trinidad and Templo de Santo Domingo. Do some cultural sightseeing at Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas and Walled City of Cartagena. Step out of Cartagena to go to Isla Baru and see Aviario Nacional de Colombia, which is approximately 50 minutes away. There's lots more to do: appreciate the extensive heritage of Bairro Getsemani, don't miss a visit to Plaza de San Diego, go for a walk through Plazoleta de Blas de Lezo, and contemplate the long history of Plaza Santo Domingo.
