The cultural, economic, and political center of the country, Vienna has developed from its early Celtic and Roman roots into a medieval and Baroque city, with an old town that was designated a World Heritage Site in 2001.
Attractions like Schonbrunn Palace and Sisi Museum make great kid-friendly stops. Pack the 5th (Mon) with family-friendly diversions at Prater. There's still lots to do: get to know the resident critters at Schönbrunn Zoo, explore the world behind art at Albertina, admire the landmark architecture of Kunst Haus Wien - Museum Hundertwasser, and ponder the world of politics at Rathaus.

You might consider the city of Budapest, divided by the Danube River into two distinctive cities--Buda and Pest--to be essentially one large World Heritage Site.
Bring the kids along to Halaszbastya and Szechenyi Chain Bridge. There's lots more to do: admire the striking features of Hungarian Parliament Building, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), boost your wellbeing at a local thermal spa, and steep yourself in history at Dohány Street Synagogue.

Take a train from Vienna to Budapest in 2.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or take a bus. In August in Budapest, expect temperatures between 32°C during the day and 18°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 10th (Sat) early enough to travel to Berlin.

The country's capital and largest city, Berlin is a diverse urban center boasting a lively nightlife and countless things to do.
On the 10th (Sat), get a sense of history and politics at Reichstag Building and then make a trip to Brandenburg Gate. On your second day here, examine the collection at Topography of Terror, pause for some photo ops at The Holocaust Memorial - Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and then explore the world behind art at Pergamonmuseum.
