The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Step off the beaten path and head to Nishinomiya Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Inano Shrine (in Itami) and Susanoo Shrine (in Nishinomiya). The adventure continues: look for gifts at Ninja Dojo and Store, take in the spiritual surroundings of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, don't miss a visit to Sannenzaka Ninenzaka, and get to know the fascinating history of Kyoto Gyoen National Garden.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Kyoto in 2.5 hours. Other options are to fly; or take a train; or drive. In February, daily temperatures in Kyoto can reach 11°C, while at night they dip to 1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 14th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
