Rethymnon combines the old-fashioned charm of a small town with proximity to long sandy beaches with all the modern conveniences usually found in big tourist resorts.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Palace of Faistos and St. Nicholas Church. Archaeological Site of Ancient Aptera and Chania Venetian Lighthouse are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Rethymnon's surroundings by going to Falassarna Beach (in Falassarna), Koimiseos Theotokou Church (in Meronas) and Matala beach (in Matala). There's more to do: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour and take in the spiritual surroundings of Monastery of Arkadi.

Fira, the busy capital of Santorini, sits on the very edge of a volcanic caldera.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Skaros Rock and Scuba & Snorkeling. Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist and Akrotiri LightHouse will appeal to history buffs. When in Fira, make a side trip to see Perivolos in Perivolos, approximately 30 minutes away. There's much more to do: identify plant and animal life at Wildlife Areas, steep yourself in history at Ancient Thera, stroll through Ekklisia Theoskepasti hiking trail, and contemplate the waterfront views at Amoudi Bay.
