Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Attractions like Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Grote Reber Museum make great kid-friendly stops. Change things up with a short trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton (about 30 minutes away). There's lots more to do: take in the awesome beauty at Mount Wellington, indulge in some culinary diversions at a local gastronomic tour, contemplate the long history of Cascades Female Factory Historic Site, and admire the natural beauty at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.

Brisbane to Hobart is an approximately 5.5- hour flight. You can also do a combination of bus and flight; or do a combination of car and ferry. Traveling from Brisbane in September, expect Hobart to be little chillier, temps between 18°C and 7°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Tue) so you can go by car to Port Arthur.

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Attractions like Coles Bay Jetty and Wineglass Bay make great kid-friendly stops. Venture out of the city with trips to Melshell Oyster Shack (in Dolphin Sands), Spiky Beach Conservation Area (in Swansea) and Spring Vale Wines (in Cranbrook). There's lots more to do: look for all kinds of wild species at Freycinet National Park, take some stellar pictures from Whalers Lookout, trek along Wineglass Bay Lookout, and enjoy the sand and surf at Honeymoon Bay.
