Famous for its resemblance to the ancient settlements of Jerusalem and Cappadocia, Matera remains one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Take a break from the city and head to Jonian Dolphin Conservation and Grotte di Castellana. You'll discover tucked-away gems like Cattedrale di Trani and Museo Nazionale Archeologico. Venture out of the city with trips to Taranto (Ponte Girevole & Castello Aragonese), Gravina Sotterranea (in Gravina in Puglia) and Andria (Santuario del SS. Salvatore di Andria & Castel del Monte). Known for its impressive hillside cascade of colorful stone buildings down to the Mediterranean shore, Amalfi is the cultural and commercial heart of southern Italy's Amalfi Coast.
Get outdoors at Fornillo and Spiaggia di castiglione. Villa Cimbrone Gardens and Duomo di Sant'Andrea are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Go for a jaunt from Amalfi to Positano to see Il Sentiero Degli Dei about 36 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: kick back and relax at Lido di Ravello, tour the pleasant surroundings at Lido Capo di Conca, admire the landmark architecture of Villa Rufolo, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Duomo di Ravello.
