World Heritage-listed Edinburgh combines ancient and modern in a uniquely Scottish atmosphere.
Change things up with a short trip to Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow (about 1h 20 min away). There's much more to do: explore the historical opulence of Edinburgh Castle, visit Edinburgh Old Town, browse the exhibits of Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, and contemplate the long history of The Real Mary King's Close.

Durness

Durness ©
Durness is a village and civil parish in the north-west Highlands of Scotland. On the 20th (Thu), make a trip to Cairn House Gallery, then Head underground at Smoo Cave, then kick back and relax at Durness Beach, and finally stroll through Sango Bay. On the 21st (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: kick back and relax at Balnakeil Beach, explore the striking landscape at Cape Wrath, and then kick back and relax at Sandwood Bay Beach.

You can drive from Edinburgh to Durness in 5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and bus; or take a bus. In August, daily temperatures in Durness can reach 20°C, while at night they dip to 11°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 21st (Fri) so you can go by car to Wick.

Stretching along both sides of the bay and divided by the eponymous river, Wick remains a good base for exploring the rugged northern coast of the Scottish mainland.
