Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Museu Nacional do Azulejo and Sintra Museum Klaus Ohnsmann will appeal to museum buffs. Step out of the city life by going to BomDia Lisboa and Guincho Beach. There's still lots to do: contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, examine the collection at National Coach Museum, learn the tricks of the trade with Time Out Market Lisboa, and make a trip to Belém Tower.

The university town of Coimbra exudes modern flair while embracing its roots as the medieval capital of Portugal.
Kick off your visit on the 17th (Thu): look for gifts at Forum Coimbra, then trek along Choupal National Forest, and then paddle through the water with O Pioneiro do Mondego. On the 18th (Fri), you'll have a packed day of sightseeing: buy something for everyone on your list at Dolce Vita Mall, examine the collection at Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja Santiago, then stop by Mercado Municipal D. Pedro V, and finally take in the architecture and atmosphere at Coro Paroquial da Sé Nova de Coimbra.

You can take a train from Lisbon to Coimbra in 2 hours. Other options are to drive; or take a bus. Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Visiting Praia do Homem do Leme and Praia do Castelo do Queijo will get you outdoors. Do your shopping at Palacio da Bolsa and Mercado do Bolhao. There's much more to do: steep yourself in history at Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), explore the activities along Rio Douro, browse the exhibits of Casa do Infante, and go for a stroll along the water at Cais da Ribeira.

Traveling by train from Coimbra to Porto takes an hour. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or drive. In September, daily temperatures in Porto can reach 27°C, while at night they dip to 15°C. Wrap up your sightseeing by early afternoon on the 22nd (Tue) to allow time for travel to Faro.

The allure of the beaches and the town's historical center draw visitors to Lagos, a coastal destination in the Barlavento region of the Algarve.
Shop till you drop at Aqua Portimao and Mercado Municipal da Avenida de Lagos. You'll get in some beach time at Praia Dona Ana and Meia Praia. When in Lagos, make a side trip to see Lipscani in Portimao, approximately 32 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: glide peacefully along the water with Extreme Algarve, take in the waterfront at Alvor Boardwalk, make a splash at Slide & Splash - Water Slide Park, and enjoy the sand and surf at Praia do Camilo.
