Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Visiting Nature & Wildlife Tours and Praia do Carneiro will get you outdoors. Get a sense of the local culture at Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral) and Torre dos Clerigos. There's lots more to do: snap pictures at Ponte de Dom Luis I, pause for some photo ops at Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular, explore the activities along Rio Douro, and enjoy the sand and surf at Praia do Homem do Leme.

Expect little chillier temperatures when traveling from Madrid in August; daily highs in Porto reach 28°C and lows reach 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Wed) to allow time to travel to Lisbon.

Built on seven hills, Lisbon has experienced a renaissance in recent years, making it the cultural star of Portugal.
Get in touch with nature at Nature & Wildlife Tours and Cabo da Roca. Get a sense of the local culture at Belém Tower and Castelo de S. Jorge. Explore Lisbon's surroundings by going to Sintra (Park and National Palace of Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, & more). Next up on the itinerary: admire the landmark architecture of Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Lisbon Oceanarium, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja Paroquial De Sao Pedro De Sintra, and wander the streets of Bairro Alto.

You can fly from Porto to Lisbon in 2.5 hours. Other options are to take a train; or drive. Traveling from Porto in August, you will find days in Lisbon are somewhat warmer (35°C), and nights are about the same (20°C). Finish up your sightseeing early on the 1st (Sun) so you can go by car to Lagos.

The allure of the beaches and the town's historical center draw visitors to Lagos, a coastal destination in the Barlavento region of the Algarve.
Take a break from the city and head to Praia Da Rocha and Falesia Beach. Your itinerary includes some good beach time at Praia da Marinha and Praia do Carvalho. Explore the numerous day-trip ideas around Lagos: Stand-Up Paddleboarding (in Armacao de Pera) and Dolphin & Whale Watching (in Albufeira). There's still lots to do: explore the striking landscape at Ponta Da Piedale.

Drive from Lisbon to Lagos in 3 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus; or do a combination of flight and bus. In September, daily temperatures in Lagos can reach 30°C, while at night they dip to 21°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 4th (Wed) to allow enough time to drive to Olhao.

Algarve Region's largest fishing port, Olhao occupies a strategically important coastal area inhabited since prehistoric times.
Relax by the water at Cabanas de Tavira beach and Praia do Barril. Igreja Matriz de Quelfes and Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Rosario will appeal to history buffs. Go for a jaunt from Olhao to Monte Gordo to see Praia de Monte Gordo about 40 minutes away. There's still lots to do: get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, look for all kinds of wild species at Ria Formosa, take in the architecture and atmosphere at Paroquia de Sao Pedro, and head outdoors with Ilha de Armona.
