Formed by the gradual merging of several old fishing villages, today the island town of Motobu-cho boasts paradisal beaches of white sand, clear waters, and a rich array of wildlife.
Step off the beaten path and head to Nakijin Castle Ruins and Zakimi Castle Ruins. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Kouri Beach and Okuma Beach. Get out of town with these interesting Motobu-cho side-trips: Kouri Ocean Tower (in Nakijin-son), Uruma Farm (in Uruma) and Kunigami-son (Daisekirinzan & Cape Hedo). There's more to do: stroll around Okinawa Memorial Park Ocean Expo Park and go for a walk through Bise no Fukugi Tree Road.

Naha, the capital of Okinawa, has deep roots: Stone Age relics have been found in the city, and through the Middle Ages it rose in importance in the Ryukyu Kingdom.
Start off your visit on the 29th (Wed): take an in-depth tour of Himeyuri Peace Museum, get to know the fascinating history of Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, steep yourself in history at The Tower of Himeyuri, then don't miss a visit to Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters, and finally explore the world behind art at Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum. Keep things going the next day: examine the collection at Yonabaruchoritsu Keiben Yonabaru Station Building Museum, explore the historical opulence of Katsuren Castle Ruins, and then discover the deep blue sea with a scuba or snorkeling tour.

Traveling by bus from Motobu-cho to Naha takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can drive; or ride a ferry. Traveling from Motobu-cho in January, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be somewhat warmer in Naha, with lows of 59°F. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Thu) early enough to travel to Ishigaki.

Satisfy your inner culture vulture at Island Countryside Settlement and Taketomi Folk Art Museum. Visiting Kondoi Beach and Kayaking & Canoeing will get you outdoors. Step out of Ishigaki to go to Iriomote-jima and see Canyoning & Rappelling Tours, which is approximately 1h 50 min away.
