Whangarei is the northernmost city in New Zealand and the regional capital of Northland Region. Get out of town with these interesting Whangarei side-trips: Ocean Beach (in Whangarei Heads), Waipu Cave (in Waipu) and Yukon Dive (in Tutukaka). There's still lots to do: stop by Town Basin, see the vivid underwater world at Poor Knights Island Marine Reserve, take in the dramatic scenery at Whangarei Falls, and admire the natural beauty at Whangarei Quarry Gardens.

Russell, formerly known as Kororāreka, was the first permanent European settlement and sea port in New Zealand. Get out of town with these interesting Russell side-trips: Paihia (Urupukapuka Island, The Cabbage Tree Shop, &more). Opononi and Omapere are dual settlements on the south shore of the Hokianga harbour in Northland Region, New Zealand. Kick off your visit on the 2nd (Fri): examine the collection at Simply Fun, go for a walk through Arai Te Uru Heritage Walk, then hike along Tane Mahuta Walk, and finally delve into the lush surroundings at Waipoua Forest.

Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga or Te Rerenga Wairua is the northwesternmost tip of the Aupouri Peninsula, at the northern end of the North Island of New Zealand. You've now added Cape Reinga Lighthouse to your itinerary. On the 3rd (Sat), stroll through Tapotupotu Beach, then hike along Te Paki Coastal Track, and then go for a walk through Cape Reinga Lighthouse.
