One of the nation's major port cities, the multicultural melting pot of Makassar gets most of its bustle from commerce and the shipping industry.
Get out of town with these interesting Makassar side-trips: Maros (Leang Petta Kere, Karst Maros, &more), Bahagia Waterfall (in Malino) and Gowa (Malino Highlands & Gowa Discovery Park). There's still lots to do: take in the waterfront at Paotere Harbor, head outdoors with Pulau Samalona, contemplate the long history of Fort Rotterdam, and head off the coast to Kodingareng Keke Island.

For other places to visit, where to stay, ratings, and tourist information, you can read our Makassar trip site.

If you are flying in from Sweden, the closest major aiport is Hasanuddin International Airport. In June, daily temperatures in Makassar can reach 38°C, while at night they dip to 27°C.
