The largest city on the island, Fukuoka formed through the merger of two former cities that had grown up either side of the Naka River.
Start off your visit on the 27th (Fri): take in nature's colorful creations at Komyozen-ji Temple, take in the spiritual surroundings of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, take in panoramic vistas at Komenoyama Obsevatory, then admire the striking features of Hakata Station, and finally contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kushida Shrine. Here are some ideas for day two: take in the spiritual surroundings of Tochoji Temple, step off the mainland to explore Nokonoshima Island, take in panoramic vistas at Fukuoka Tower, let little ones run wild at Ohori Park, then admire the masterpieces at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and finally browse the different shops at Tenjin Underground Shopping Center.

Jakarta, Indonesia to Fukuoka is an approximately 12.5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and train. Due to the time zone difference, you'll lose 2 hours traveling from Jakarta to Fukuoka. Prepare for colder weather when traveling from Jakarta in December: high temperatures in Fukuoka hover around 13°C and lows are around 5°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Sat) early enough to drive to Kitakyushu.

An important gateway for trade and travel between Honshu and Kyushu, the city of Kitakyushu has an old industrial waterfront and provides access to a number of natural sites across the wider region.
Kick off your visit on the 29th (Sun): wander the streets of Mojiko Retro, then get up close and personal with brilliant marine life at Kaikyokan, then contemplate the long history of Old Mojimitsui Club, and finally explore the historical opulence of Kokura Castle. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the 30th (Mon): steep yourself in history at Old Ito Denemon House, get outside with Mt Sarakura, then learn more about the world around you at Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History, and finally get to know the resident critters at Itozu no Mori Zoological Park.

Traveling by car from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 13°C in December, and nighttime lows around 7°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 30th (Mon) early enough to catch the train to Kagoshima.

Traveling from Kitakyushu in December, plan for little chillier nights in Kagoshima, with lows around 3°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 2nd (Thu) so you can catch the train to Miyazaki.

The hilly port city of Nagasaki has become known internationally as one of the two Japanese cities to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the close of World War II.
Take a break from Nagasaki with a short trip to Huis Ten Bosch in Sasebo, about 1h 15 min away. There's still lots to do: take an in-depth tour of Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, snap pictures at Megane Bridge, take in nature's colorful creations at Glover Garden, and walk around Nagasaki Peace Park.
